Dr. Jorge Emmanuel is an interdisciplinary researcher with wide-ranging interests. From 1981 to 1992, he was an associate in Southeast Asia Studies, focusing on development, Philippine-US relations, human rights, and the social impact of technology, at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan, where he received his PhD in chemical engineering. In addition to engineering and Southeast Asia studies, his academic training also includes public health, environmental science, chemistry, renewable energy technologies, and infection control and prevention.
He was Chief Technical Advisor for global projects of the United Nations Development Program in New York from 2003 to 2015, and was a consultant to the World Health Organization and to environment and health ministries and NGOs in over 40 countries. In 2015-2016, he led a United Nations team fighting the Ebola epidemic in west Africa before returning to the Philippines as a 2016 DOST Balik Scientist. He is now an adjunct professor of environmental science and of engineering at Silliman University, where he has led interdisciplinary research teams on disaster risk reduction for riverside communities impacted by floods; and on barriers and strategies for expanding Zero Waste sari-sari stores in the Philippines.
His other current research interests include climate change, solid waste management, and microplastics in the marine environment. He is the author of nine books, five book chapters, and many scholarly papers in different fields. His history book โThe Forbidden Book: The Philippine-American War in Political Cartoonsโ won the Calatagan Award from the Philippine American Writers & Artists and the Gustavus Myers Book of the Year Award in 2005. He received the Plaridel Award for International Reporting from the Philippine-American Press Club in 2015 for his reporting on the Ebola epidemic. His most recent book, to be published by the United Nations Environment Program, deals with healthcare waste in the context of the global plastics crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Miwako Hosoda from the School of Education, Seisa University will join the upcoming 10th National Social Science Congress as our keynote speaker!

Dr. Miwako Hosoda, Professor of Seisa University, has been conducting her sociological research though observing human relations in the healthcare field. Using knowledge from her prior research on patient advocacy, healthcare policy, and public participation in medicine, she has been making collaborative efforts with local residents with illnesses and disabilities she had engaged. Together, they are continuing to seek out ways to help the recovery in their communities.
Dr. Hosoda graduated from the Department of Sociology at the University of Tokyo in 1992 and received an MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of Tokyo. After working as a research fellow at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, she studied at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health as a research fellow. Upon returning to Japan, she joined Seisa University in 2012 and served as vice president from 2013 to 2020.
Dr. Hosoda was elected as president of ISA (International Sociological Association), Research Committee of Sociology of Health (2018-2023), and APSA (Asia Pacific Sociological Association (2017-2020).
