Philippine Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences

Philippine Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences Image

This second volume of the Philippine Encyclopedia of Social Sciences discusses historiography of the Philippines from the point of view of the Philippine National Historical Society. It traces the development of historical writing on the Philippines— from its beginnings in the chronicles of Spanish missionaries who wrote about their encounters with the indigenous peoples and cultures of the archipelago, to the literature produced by the Ilustrados of the 19th century, and the mass of historical writing since the post-war period. The articles are historiographic and bibliographic in nature, defining major concepts and terms in the context of Philippine historiography, and then citing selected works pertaining to a particular trend in historical writing in the Philippines. The articles also describe some of the major documentary and manuscript sources in Philippine history found in the Philippines and abroad. A select list of past and present Filipino historians and a brief biography of each are also included in the volume.
